Haydarpaşa Station Restoration 2026: What Is Planned and When It Will Reopen

Haydarpaşa Train Station undergoing restoration on the Istanbul waterfront

What Is Happening at Haydarpaşa Station?

If you’ve taken a ferry across the Bosphorus to Kadıköy, you’ve seen it — the grand neo-classical façade of Haydarpaşa Station rising from the waterline like a palace. Built in 1909 as the terminus of the Baghdad Railway, this building has been one of Istanbul’s most recognizable landmarks for over a century.

Since 2012, the station has been largely closed to the public for restoration work. After years of delays, fire damage in 2010, and shifting government plans, the project is now entering its final phase. Turkey’s Minister of Culture and Tourism has confirmed that Haydarpaşa is on track to reopen as a multi-purpose cultural complex by late 2026.

💡 Insider Tip: Even during the restoration, the waterfront promenade in front of Haydarpaşa remains one of the best spots to photograph the station. Arrive just before sunset — the western light hits the stone façade perfectly, and the Bosphorus ferries passing in front create an unbeatable composition.

What Will the Restored Haydarpaşa Include?

The restoration plan transforms Haydarpaşa from a dormant railway station into an active cultural destination. Based on official announcements, the complex will include:

  • An archaeological park — excavations during restoration uncovered Byzantine and Ottoman-era artifacts beneath the station
  • An archaeological museum — housing finds from the site itself
  • A performing arts center — concert and theater spaces in restored halls
  • Art workshops and exhibition galleries — utilizing the station’s historic interior spaces
  • Retail and dining areas — ground-floor spaces facing the waterfront
  • Preserved railway heritage — a section of the station will retain its original function as a working train platform, paying homage to over a century of rail service

The project is part of a broader government initiative that also includes the parallel restoration of Sirkeci Station on the European side, which will similarly serve as a cultural and arts hub.

When Will It Reopen?

The official target is late 2026, though no specific month has been confirmed. Given Turkey’s track record with large restoration projects, a realistic estimate puts the public opening somewhere between Q4 2026 and early 2027. Partial openings of the waterfront areas and ground-floor spaces may come earlier.

What Does This Mean for Visitors?

Once open, Haydarpaşa will transform the Kadıköy waterfront into an even more compelling destination. Currently, most visitors head straight from the Kadıköy ferry terminal into the market streets and Moda neighborhood. The restored station will add a significant cultural anchor to the Asian side, giving you a concrete reason to spend more time in the area.

For now, you can still admire the exterior from the Kadıköy pier or from the ferry itself. The building is stunning from the water, and it’s worth taking the short Eminönü–Kadıköy ferry just to pass by it at close range.

The Bigger Picture: Istanbul’s Heritage Revival

Haydarpaşa’s restoration is part of a broader heritage campaign across Istanbul. The city is actively investing in restoring and repurposing its historical infrastructure — from the Theodosian-era land walls to Ottoman-era fountains scattered across the old city. For visitors, this means that Istanbul’s cultural landscape is expanding, not just preserving what already exists but creating new reasons to return.

If you’re planning a trip to Istanbul in late 2026 or 2027, Haydarpaşa Station should be on your radar. It’s shaping up to be one of the most significant new cultural destinations the city has seen in years.
